3D marine seismic surveys

 

The Autonomous Self Pop-up Nodes (SPNs) and GNS™ acquisition method is a breakthrough seismic data acquisition technology delivering a number of benefits which traditional marine acquisition technology cannot provide:

 

Geophysical Advantages:

  • The offset range of acquired data is not limited and could be chosen according to the local geological objectives;
  • Full-azimuth illumination of the survey target;
  • Multi-component seismic data: By recording the full seismic wavefield on the seabed with a 3C geophone and a hydrophone, geophysicists can obtain the images of the sub-surface in PP, PS, SS and SP waves;
  • Down-going and up-coming energy separation by hydrophone and vertical geophone component stacking is an effective tool for all receiver side surface related multiples suppression;
  • Uniform wave field sampling in in-line and cross-line directions;
  • Recording units have no connection with the sea surface, which provides quiet ambient environment, no tow streamer noise and lower surface generated noise.

Operational Advantages:

  • No need for specially equipped seismic vessel;
  • Lowering of outboard equipment costs - lower survey risk;
  • Less affected by surface weather conditions, especially in Polar seas with harsh ice conditions;
  • Survey obstructions (especially in production areas), intense ship traffic, fishing activity and shallow water zones is not a problem;
  • Possibility to use the same seabed recording equipment for passive reservoir monitoring and for relatively low frequency passive noise recording for direct hydrocarbon detection;
  • No depth limits (from 0 to 7000 meters water depths).

Economic advantages:

  • Less costs of outboard equipment – less investment cost and shorter timing for survey mobilization;
  • Fast and easy replacement of failed seismic nodes;
  • Reduced cost of 3D seismic survey in comparison with 3D streamer seismic vessels (for 4 - 8 streamers vessels) - with the same bin size and fold and with the nearly the same survey time, but with better data quality (see geophysical advantages). The combined daily rate of two operation vessels used for node 3D survey is less then daily rate of 3D seismic streamer vessel.
